Can’t Afford Showbie Pro? Here’s What You Gotta Know

Leaving a community that provides a lot for you in regards to technology is, well hard.  If you serve as any type of IT person, I applaud and thank you.  Other than losing help in the IT world, I have also lost “free” access to school supported programs that I adore.

When you have used a solid platform for a number of years, you simply don’t want to let it go, so when I found out there were some limitations to one of my FAVORITE resources, I had to get to thinking.  Showbie, I wish I could afford you in Pro form, yet I can not….

If you don’t know how to or have never set up a Showbie account, let me tell you that it is VERY simple.  However, if you are not able to afford the Pro version, there are a few things you need to know when setting up your account.

Top things to know:

  • You can only have 10 active assignments total for ALL classes.  Therefore, you need to archive all old assignments.
  • Teachers can not connect parent emails.  Therefore, you need to front load the idea that for parents to access student work, the student will need to log onto their Showbie account.
  • You can’t have a co-teacher….. boo! Possible solution: share log-in information?
  • No access to grade book…. again boo!
  • Top word of warning: You students’ assignments have to stay small, so make sure you limit video sizes when talking about creation projects.  Yes, this is the BIGGEST BOO.

The good news for Showbie this year?

  • Showbie Pro is only $149 for a year
  • Socrative just joined the Showbie family.  If you aren’t familiar with Socrative, click here.

So what is a teacher to do if they can’t afford the $149 for this school year?

Well, I thought proactively about what assignments I know my students are going to be required to complete and turn in for a grade.  Usually I have a file for each assignment, but this year I combined two assignments per file.  This is by no means perfect, but still allows some organization.

In the past, I have had a different file for each paper due, but with being limited to 10 total assignments, I know I have to do something different.  Therefore, I have created a writing folder in which all writing assignments can be submitted to this year. Screen Shot 2018-07-20 at 2.56.53 PM

I also created a generic file labeled “Classwork”.  This will allow me to add things that I have not even realized students will need to turn in this year.

The teacher could also archive each assignment as it is completed, but I think this is not an ideal situation.  It would definitely not allow one to analyze student growth throughout the year.

If you have any solutions to using the free version of Showbie, feel free to share your thoughts!
